What you'll do

Astrophysics is a branch of astronomy that explores how the universe originated and how it has evolved. Astrophysicists use a variety of tools to study the universe, including telescopes, satellites, particle accelerators, and computer simulations.

Where you'll work

National observatories and laboratories such as Jodrell Bank, government departments, space agencies, commercial space companies such as SpaceX or Virgin Galactic, astronomy departments at universities. May even go to outer space!

Salary range

£16,000 – £61,000

Skills you'll need

  • An excellent grasp of physics and maths
  • Analytical and critical-thinking skills
  • Strong research skills
  • Good attention to detail
  • Able to gather, interpret and report data
  • Must love space
  • Foreign languages – especially Russian – would be useful as this is a very international industry.
