What you'll do

Design, build, test and maintain lasers for a variety of applications and industries, such as telecommunications, manufacturing, surgery and electronics.

Where you'll work

It depends on the type of industry but you might expect to work in a university laboratory or a manufacturing workshop.

Salary range

£47,000 – £86,000

Must enjoy hands-on, practical work
Need a good grasp of physics
Good at spotting and resolving problems
Analytical thinking
Will need to learn engineering-related software packages such as Autocad
Must be willing to learn and stay up to date with changing technology
