Optical Engineer

What you'll do

Design and operate optical equipment that harnesses the properties of light using physics and chemistry, such as lenses, microscopes, telescopes, lasers, sensors and discs like CDs and DVDs.

Where you'll work

Various industries employ optical engineers: agriculture, aerospace, computers, entertainment, lighting, and medical industries. Where you work will depend on which industry, but you will probably be working in offices on computers, in laboratories and on manufacturing or construction sites.

Salary range

£19,000 – £70,000
