Seismologist

What you'll do

Study shock-waves created by earthquakes and volcanic activity to try to predict future events. Deliberately create seismic waves using controlled explosions or vibrations from trucks to determine where oil and gas lies under the earth. Help to uncover archeological sites.

Where you'll work

In offices and research laboratories; outside in places where there is seismic activity. On ships, oil rigs or in mineshafts.

Salary range

£20,000 – £50,000

Skills you'll need

  • Knowledge of geography, physics and maths
  • Comfortable with computer modelling systems
  • Should enjoy being outside, including out at sea
  • Able to understand and assimilate data
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
