Sound Engineer

What you'll do

You’ll be in charge of the technical side of a recording or live performance. You will design and manage sound levels and outputs, and mix and edit the sounds that are produced by the artist(s). You’ll also maintain the physical sound equipment, like amps and microphones.

Where you'll work

In recording studios; in TV and radio stations; on TV and film sets; at live events such as theatres, concerts and festivals.

Salary range

£14,000 – £40,000+.  Although sound engineers working for the most famous artists can earn much more than this!

Skills you'll need

  • A well-tuned ear and a love of music
  • An understanding of how sound is produced and travels – you learn this in physics
  • Must like messing about with electronics
  • Must be able to build rapport with other people so as to keep the production process flowing
