What you'll do

Assess the risk of flooding in various places and come up with ways to reduce the damage that could be caused by floods.

Where you'll work

Government bodies such as the Environment Agency or Defra. Insurance companies. Climate change consultancies. Environmental NGOs. You will work both in offices and in the field, at locations at risk of flooding.

Salary range

£23,000 – £140,000

Skills you'll need

  • Geography, maths, physics knowledge
  • Data analysis skills
  • You will need to learn to use various computer modelling software packages
  • Project management skills
  • An interest in how buildings are built
  • An understanding of how rivers and oceans behave
  • Good teamwork skills
  • Must be willing to drop everything and act quickly if a flood occurs
