What you'll do

A patent attorney is a type of lawyer who assesses whether an invention or innovation is genuinely new and therefore able to be patented. You’ll write patent applications and represent inventors who believe their patents have been infringed by copycats.

Where you'll work

In offices; either in private law firms advising clients, or in-house for large corporations. Might have to visit clients. Will occasionally give evidence in a courtroom.

Salary range

£27,000 – £98,000+

Skills you'll need

  • A good grasp of maths and physics is normally expected, to help you understand the product invention and decide whether it is a genuine innovation
  • Good people skills, for dealing with others
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills – must be able to argue well!
