What you'll do

Experiment! Basically, you’ll design and carry out controlled scientific experiments and trials and assess what happened in them. Every field of science has its own researchers and research topics can range wildly, from the important to the bizarre. The sky’s the limit!

Where you'll work

You could work for government agencies, specialist research organisations or universities, or charities. Most of your work will probably be in a laboratory but many research scientists travel often to collect samples or information (fieldwork) or to meet with other researchers in their field.

Salary range

£25,000 – £70,000

Skills you'll need

  • Relevant qualification (generally a PhD) in a science field such as biology, physics or chemistry.
  • Data analysis skills
  • Written and oral communication
  • Accuracy
  • Attention to detail
  • Patience
  • Curiosity
