Special Effects (SFX) Technician

What you'll do

Produce visual, pyrotechnic (explosive) or physical effects in order to create a particular impression or illusion in a film, TV, stage or video production.

Where you'll work

Most SFX technicians are freelance and work either indoors in a studio or outdoors on location.

If you specialise in visual effects, you would work mostly at a computer. If you specialise in physical effects, you would work a lot in workshops or on-site at events. If you specialise in pyrotechnics (fireworks and explosives) you would work outside a lot. You can expect to travel often.

Salary range

£112 – £828 a day

Skills you'll need

  • An understanding of forces, movement and motion; you learn this in physics
  • Good skills in design and technology is key
  • Also useful to have knowledge of computer science, animation, engineering
