What you'll do

Study patterns of weather and climate from the Earth’s atmosphere and oceans to make forecasts about future weather. Save lives by warning of storms, floods, heatwaves and other freak weather events. Model the likely effects of global warming. Present your predictions live on TV! (Fancy name is ‘meteorologist’ – although not all meteorologists become TV presenters.)

Where you'll work

Most meteorologists work at universities or the Met Office; those on TV shows work from TV studios. Many travel frequently to investigate and collect information from weather-affected regions.

Salary range

£20,000 – £60,000; the most famous TV weather presenters can earn over £100,000
